Our History: UAW Local 724

The story of UAW Local 724 is one of unity, determination, and the ongoing fight for fairness in the workplace. Since our founding, Local 724 has stood as a voice for working people — advocating for better wages, safer working conditions, and the dignity every worker deserves.

Rooted in the values of the broader UAW movement, our local has played a vital role in shaping labor standards within our region. From the earliest organizing efforts to the present day, the strength of UAW Local 724 has always come from the solidarity and resilience of our members.

This section honors the legacy of those who came before us and highlights the key milestones that have defined our journey. As we look to the future, we remain committed to protecting the rights of workers and building a stronger union for generations to come.

UAW Local 724 was chartered by the UAW International Union in 1940 by Federal Drop Forge-Federal Division and Melling Forging as the two charter Units. Although the records are not entirely clear it appears as though the local has been located at least four different places in the Lansing area.
In May 2007, the UAW was successful in organizing the Alliance Interiors facility that is located across from the General Motor SPO warehouse on Mt. Hope.  The membership produced carpeting and sound deadening parts for the General Motors Delta Township and Spring Hill plants.
On October 7, 2004, the membership of the Delta Dental Unit of Local 724 walked off their job on went on strike.
On November 18, 1996, after failing to reach a fair and equitable bargaining agreement and taking various concessions and cost saving measures, the proud members of Melling Forging, Unit 3 of UAW Local 724 walked off the job and went on strike.
